“Sutton-at-Hone Church and it’s Worshippers – The Story of an Ancient Church” – Horace J. Balls. Published by HG Ellis & Sons Ltd, Hythe Street, Dartford, 1955. Foreword by Sir Stephen Tallents. Copies are available in Dartford Library and it can also be purchased from Abebooks.co.uk or Ebay.co.uk. This is a very readable history of the church and the village with lovely illustrations.
“The Village Surveyed” – Cecil Stewart with a preface by Sir Stephen Tallents. Published by Edward Arnold & Co, London, 1948. Copies are available in Dartford Library and it can also be purchased from Abebooks.co.uk or Ebay.co.uk. This is an intriguing book in that village was surveyed after the end of the Second World War and the local people were asked what they would like to see happen in the future in the village.
“The Tales of Old Gardeners” – Jean Stone, Louise Brodie & Avis Murray. Published by David & Charles, 1994. This is out of print but copies can be found (cheaply) on abebooks.co.uk. This book has a chapter on the experiences of Edgar Spillett working as gardener and chauffeur at St John’s Jerusalem.
“Green Thoughts” – Sir Stephen Tallents. Published by Faber & Faber, 1952. Copies are available in Dartford Library and it can also be purchased from Abebooks.co.uk or Ebay.co.uk. The original front cover features a lovely drawing of St John’s, and it features a variety of articles on country topics.
“A Scholar and a Gentleman: Edward Hasted, The Historian of Kent” – Shirley Burgoyne Black. Published by Darenth Valley Publications, 2001. Edward Hasted is the noted 18th century historian of Kent, and he lived at St John’s Jerusalem.
“Good Neighbours – Dartford’s Villages” – Peter Boreham & Chris Baker
Published by Dartford Borough Council, Dartford Kent, 1993. This 64 page softback book covers Stone, Swanscombe & Greenhithe, Wilmington, Sutton at Hone & Hawley, Darenth, Bean, Southfleet and Longfield, and has some good illustrations. It can be purchased from Abebooks.co.uk or Ebay.co.uk.
